mit Prof. Dr. Ingo Fietze

Professor Ingo Fietze is Germany’s best‑known sleep researcher and head of the Interdisciplinary Center of Sleep Medicine at Charité. He is an internationally recognized somnologist, chronobiologist, sleep physician, internist, pulmonologist and pathophysiologist, and one of the most important advocates for sleep education – in companies, elite sports and schools.
His path into sleep medicine was by no means preordained: After finishing secondary school, he studied biomedical biophysics in Moscow before continuing his medical training at Charité and beginning specialist training in pathophysiology. At an institute for medicine under extreme conditions – for example in Antarctica or in space – he came into close contact with the topics of wakefulness, sleep and the sleep–wake rhythm. This combination of biomedicine, internal rhythms and concrete sleep disorders fascinated him so much that he decided to dedicate himself permanently to the subject of sleep.
In 1990, Fietze initiated the first sleep laboratory at Charité and gradually developed it into today’s interdisciplinary center with an outpatient clinic, modern sleep laboratory, research sleep lab and a specialized team that treats people of all ages with the most diverse sleep disorders. In parallel, he became a specialist in internal medicine, acquired additional qualifications in pulmonology and sleep medicine, completed his habilitation and was appointed professor.
As chairman of the German Sleep Foundation, long‑standing member of professional societies and leader of various working groups, he brings cutting‑edge sleep‑medicine knowledge into the heart of society – with projects such as “Sleep Makes School”, workplace health promotion programs and the care of elite athletes, pilots and ensembles such as the Staatsballett Berlin. In his non‑fiction books and courses, Ingo Fietze brings together this clinical experience, scientific depth and practical educational work with one goal: to show people in an understandable way how good sleep works and how they can sustainably improve their own sleep quality.
